Flash Usability – 2Advanced v5 Attractor, Deeplinking & History Events

The 2Advanced team has delivered an awesome example of Web Browser/ SWF integration

Deeplinking

Flash element is embedded using the fantastic deconcept’ s SWFObject. Browsing management is handled by the Really Simple History (RSH) Ajax framework mainly known as dhtmlHistory. I will make the assumption that the ExternalInterface API is the one in charge at the other side.

Great job guys!

  1. Everyone as been raving about this site, 2advanced.com, as well they should be. Deeplinking in Flash, rather the absence of, is something that I personally feel that has kept Flash off the forefront in areas like content management systems. I’ve only found two flaws with their approach to date, and they are detailed below:

If you type in http://www.2advanced.com/ and hit enter, then type in http://www.2advanced.com/#company and hit enter, and then type in http://www.2advanced.com/#portfolio and hit enter, and finally hit the back arrow, you will be looking at the the company page but the url will say http://www.2advanced.com/#portfolio. Hit the back arrow again and you are on the first page but the url still reads http://www.2advanced.com/#portfolio .

So it would seem that the history is being stored by the javascript on the site somewhere, but in this particular case, when the user hits the back arrow, the url is unchanged.

The other problem is that if you navigate through the site for a while, and then you hit the back button a couple of times in sucession, the swf hangs. Probably not much of an issue for a corporate site such as this, but in a content management system or some other kind of page with multiple linked documents such as a tutorial page, this could be a real problem.

Just thought I’d bring this to light. Otherwise, kudos to 2advanced on a very aesthetically pleasing site. I especially like the relation of content to color. Nice touch. ;)
